Infection Control
One of the National Patient Safety Goals is to reduce the number of hospital acquired infections. It is everyone’s job to prevent and control infections for the well-being of patients, healthcare workers and visitors. There are steps patients can take as partners with their caregivers to greatly minimize the presence of germs during a hospital stay.
- Be aware that handwashing is the best way to prevent the spread of germs. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 15 seconds.
- Practice good personal hygiene.
- Let your nurse know if your gown or linens are soiled.
- It’s okay to remind caregivers to wash their hands, use hand sanitizer, or wear gloves before examining you or giving a medication.
- Ask friends and relatives who have colds, respiratory symptoms or other contagious illnesses not to visit you or anyone in the hospital.
- If you cough or sneeze, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue, then discard the tissue and wash your hands.
- In special situations, like isolation, you will be asked to learn about the restrictions that may be in place and to follow those guidelines.
